A duo of Conservative politicians is set to unveil a new initiative aimed at drawing in voters who feel politically abandoned. Sir Andy Street, a former mayor of the West Midlands, and Baroness Ruth Davidson, who previously led the Scottish Conservatives, are launching this movement with the goal of engaging millions of individuals they describe as "politically homeless."
On Monday, they will present their plans to re-engage moderate voters who, they believe, turned away from the Tory party during the last general election. The initiative intends to collaborate with these voters to shape policies that align with their interests and concerns.
During an appearance on BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, both Sir Andy and Baroness Davidson expressed their support for Kemi Badenoch’s leadership within the Conservative Party, asserting that they hope to see her become Prime Minister. However, they revealed through their research that around seven million individuals identifying as centrists or center-right feel unrepresented by any political party at the moment.
They believe there is significant potential for a movement that prioritizes essential issues such as taxation, housing, infrastructure, and business investment. Sir Andy articulated their vision, stating: "Our goal is to establish a grassroots national movement that actively engages with voters and businesses alike. We want to put forth ideas focused on economic matters and fundamental issues that enhance the quality of life for people across the country."
This initiative emerges at a challenging time for the Conservatives, who faced their most disappointing general election results in history in 2024. The party is currently contending with considerable competition from Reform UK, which has consistently led in national opinion polls and witnessed numerous high-profile defections from the Conservative ranks.
Sir Andy, who has a background as a managing director at John Lewis and has been elected twice as Conservative mayor in the West Midlands, noted that "the forces of populism, both from the left and right, are surging throughout the western world." He emphasized that this new movement is a response to that, declaring, "We want to assert that this is not the case in Britain."
He firmly believes in a resilient center-right faction that values British institutions, the country's future, and is eager to foster growth rather than destruction. Baroness Davidson echoed this sentiment, describing Badenoch as a "reliable Conservative who can genuinely connect with a diverse audience of current and potential supporters."
Nevertheless, she acknowledged that there exists a substantial segment of potential supporters who might not view her as the ideal representative. Reflecting on her past experience when the Conservatives became the second-largest party in the Scottish Parliament, she remarked, "This movement is about those who feel that the Conservative Party has abandoned them, while they also find themselves without a home in Labour or the Liberal Democrats."
In her posts on X, she emphasized, "We aim to reach out to those who feel politically homeless and collaborate with them—alongside the business sector—to formulate practical, pragmatic policies that enhance lives and create opportunities."
