The colossal pyramids of Ancient Egypt, enduring symbols of human ingenuity, are once again at the center of a cosmic debate following the passing of a controversial author who boldly declared they weren't built by human hands alone!
The passing of Swiss author Erich Von Daniken on January 10th, at the remarkable age of 90, has stirred renewed interest in his provocative theories. For decades, Von Daniken captivated millions with his belief that ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians and the Mayans, received a helping hand from extraterrestrial visitors.
His 1968 book, "Chariots of the Gods," became a global sensation, catapulting him to fame as a leading proponent of the ancient alien theory. He argued that monumental achievements like the Great Pyramid showcased an engineering prowess far beyond the capabilities of ancient peoples working in isolation.
Von Daniken's central thesis was that these celestial visitors shared advanced knowledge and technology, enabling the construction of structures that would otherwise have been impossible. He pointed to several aspects of pyramid construction that he found inexplicable for the time, such as the transportation of massive stone blocks, the apparent lack of lighting within the structures, and what he perceived as a sophisticated grasp of mathematics that surpassed ancient understanding.
He even highlighted what he considered striking numerical coincidences, famously questioning if it was mere chance that the Great Pyramid's height, when multiplied by one billion, closely approximated the distance between the Earth and the Sun. But here's where it gets controversial... Von Daniken also suggested that these otherworldly beings promised Egyptian rulers a 'second life,' which he believed explained the intricate practices of mummification and the elaborate burial of treasures alongside pharaohs. He wrote, “Drawings and sagas actually indicated that the ‘gods’ promised to return from the stars to awaken the well-preserved bodies to new life.”
And this is the part most people miss... While Von Daniken's ideas resonated with many, they have consistently been met with skepticism and outright rejection from archaeologists and historians. Extensive excavations at pyramid sites have unearthed a wealth of evidence pointing to human construction efforts. This includes the discovery of entire settlements where laborers lived during the immense building projects. Archaeological records clearly document how these workers were provided with food and accommodation, and nearby cemeteries containing their remains have also been identified. Furthermore, quarries where the colossal stone blocks were extracted and prepared for transport have been found in close proximity to the monuments, directly challenging the notion of non-human involvement.
Research overwhelmingly indicates that large, highly organized workforces were a reality in ancient Egypt, a fact that stands in stark contrast to Von Daniken’s assertion that such monumental feats required otherworldly intervention. Despite lacking formal archaeological training, Von Daniken traveled extensively, sharing his ideas through books, lectures, and films, reaching a global audience. His books alone sold over 60 million copies in 32 languages, and he continued to explore these themes in 25 subsequent titles.
Even in recent times, the idea has resurfaced. In July 2020, Elon Musk tweeted, “Aliens built the pyramids obv.” Nigel Watson, author of "Portraits of Alien Encounters Revisited," offered a nuanced perspective on Von Daniken's legacy. Watson noted, “Thumbing his nose at mainstream archaeology, he claimed aliens either directly built the pyramids or helped humans to build them. It did not matter what sceptics said, as this was all based on belief rather than facts.” He added, “Some will see him as a cynical conman, others as a fearless pioneer who fought mainstream science.”
