Imagine the audacity! A coyote, of all creatures, decides to take a dip and ends up on the infamous Alcatraz Island! This unexpected event left tourists and staff utterly bewildered. How did this wild animal manage such a feat?
On a recent Sunday, a daring coyote was captured on video, paddling its way to the rocky shores of the former prison. The footage, shared by a tourist, shows the coyote, looking a bit worse for wear, shivering on the rocks.
"It can barely stand," someone in the video remarks, "It looks like maybe he's cold."
The video was given to a guest relations employee for Alcatraz City Cruises, who then alerted park rangers, according to reports. But when the officials arrived, the coyote had vanished. One employee speculated that the animal might have fallen into the water while hunting and was swept away.
But here's where it gets controversial... A boat captain suggested that the currents were too strong that day for any animal to overcome. The employee who saw the coyote agreed, noting that the animal didn't seem to be in good condition after its harrowing swim.
No one knows the coyote's starting point, but the mainland of San Francisco is about 1.25 miles away. The coyote might have also come from Marin or Angel Island, where a family of coyotes has been known to reside, according to SFGATE.
"We've been wandering around the island looking for him, but no one has been able to spot him," the employee added, suggesting the coyote might remain hidden for a while.
Comments on the video, posted on Facebook, revealed other sightings of coyotes on the island. One commenter wrote, "Such a brave coyote but all tired. When I went to Alcatraz a week ago I saw one. Hope they get help." Another exclaimed, "Wow! I've seen this at Angel Island but this is impressive."
What do you think? Is this coyote a symbol of resilience, or a case of unfortunate circumstances? Do you think it made the swim on purpose, or was it an accident? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
