The Import Conundrum

However, Severin Borenstein, a UC Berkeley energy economist, paints a bleaker picture. If the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for another 60 days, the price of crude could climb by another $40 to $80 a barrel, translating to about $1 per gallon at the pump. This scenario is considered plausible, and Borenstein warns that California policy has little impact on this outcome.
The EV Revolution
The gas crisis has sparked a renewed interest in EVs. California has been pushing for a transition away from gas-powered cars, but the Trump administration's revocation of a key federal tax incentive last year undercut these efforts.
Now, Governor Gavin Newsom is negotiating a new state incentive to revive EV sales. While it's too early to tell if the pain at the pump is translating into a broad rebound in EV demand, some consumers are already making the switch.
